Hey guys - engine question here: what happens after you experience engine knocking due to low-grade fuel and the ECU corrects the engine timing? Does it go back to the original state after you put premium gas back in?

I think I got some bad gas from a shady station between LA and SF. I put in a full tank of "91 octane", but I started getting engine knocks almost immediately (before I even made it off the freeway onramp.) Pulled off to the shoulder and listened for a minute or so, and the knocking sound went away.

Did the car correct itself by changing the spark timing? If so, is the timing permanently affected or will it fix itself when the bad gas is out of the system?

Thanks for the help!

The ECU can sense the presence of a different fuel grade and adjust the timing accordingly - the car is constantly monitoring what's going on, so you should be safe. Once you put a batch of good fuel back in, the car will go back to normal as well...

Don't buy shady gas anymore!
