Hey guys, my JDM Fairlady Z TT is nearing 100k kms (60k miles), and I was wondering about fluid changes.

I was thinking that I should get the transmission (5 speed), and rear diff fluids changed, but I don't know what type of gear oil is best, and if there are any special additives required for the limited slip diff, or synchros/etc.

I'm probably not into going Royal Purple or anything like that, maybe just Castrol synthetic gear oil, but will that be ok? Any input would be great, thanks!

So, just Redline synthetic gear oil for the diff, is there a separate manual transmission fluid they sell, or just use gear oil in the transmission? I saw Royal Purple manual transmission fluid at the local auto parts store, is that any good?

When it comes time to flush the transmission in my car (5spd as well), does the transmission have to be taken out in order to access the filler hole on top?

I looked in the service manual but it only identifies the filler plug on top of the transmission in an exploded view of the car.

And yes, Redline rocks

I can vouch for Redline MT90 (75w90) gear oil. I had a tiny crunch at a redline shift from 3rd to 4th. Changed my fluid to Redline MT90 and that is all gone.

As for motor oil, I current run 10W40 Amsoil, but I will be switching to Mobil 1 10W40 full synthetic soon. No bad experiences here, just changes in my loyalty and other things that wouldn't affect your decision here :P . lol

Yea, but 100,000 KMS is the interval at whick you want to change the transmission, diff and engine fluids.

Refer to this image from the service manual for other items to inspect/change: http://www.300zx-twinturbo.com/s.manual/ma/004.gif

Ensure that all 80,000 KM items are in order too.

100,000km is also the Nissan recommended interval at which they recommend replacing the timing belt. This might be fine to not do for now, if it has not been changed before, but I wouldn't go beyond 120,000 KM without changing it. After all the engine is interference, meaning if the timing belt breaks or skips (skips so far, not just a tooth or tho) a valve will collide with a piston and you will be out an engine.

Check the timing belt cover to see if there is any sticker/plaque/markings indicating the timing belt was done.

I have a JDM Z and mine has one (mostly in JDM scribble lol) saying mine was done at around 62,000 km if memory serves me correct. Don't know why, but I would have had to do mine quite recently if it had not been.

@ nsrZ32 (or anyone else)

Do you have to take the transmission out to flush the fluid or is there another way to reach the top filling hole?

Remove the fill hole plug first because if you remove the drain plug first and the fill plug is stuck you will have no way to get fluid in the transmission

Isnt there special fluid required for the viscous dif?

And, Arent these trannies like s13 trannies where you can fill em through the shifter hole?

No special fluid for the differential because it is a sealed viscous coupling inside the diffy thus not in contact with the fluid in the differential. The transmission is filled from the side fill hole only which is the reason I stated that to make sure that filler plug can be removed before draining out the bottom of the transmission.

I have a Fairlady z TT and my gears are slipping now and it won't even stay in 3rd gear without it kicking out of gear. I pulled my transmission dipstick and its stunk really bad. What should I do without spending a crapload on my car just to find out it was something simple?

Auto trans then? There's a procedure you can do to pull codes from the transmission control unit. do this and report back. A code won't always pop a transmission light. I also recommend making your own thread in the Z32 tech section.

Does it smell burnt or just smell like stinky ATF?

+1 on getting the codes and getting back to us.

Lastly, Welcome to NICO.
