Understeer can be caused by a lot of things, Tire pressure, tires, suspension. Basically if you put a good suspension and tires on the car it will eliminate most of the understeer problems. AS far as I know this is the way it is, I am no car genious. We do have some on this site. You should go check some of the technical sections. There are some really smart people over there that very rarly come out to gen chat.

my car understeered a lot too, stock. tire selection, upgraded shocks, and replacing the bushings makes a huge difference. I also have some chassis braces that helped a lot. But the big thing that helped is driving style...gotta adjust your driving style so that it doesn't understeer.

understeer or oversteer is fixed by sway bars..

thats not the best solution though...if you put bars on your car so stiff that its easy to oversteer then it makes it undriveable in the rain... something to think about.besides it makes your IRS more equivilent to a solid axle.

I'm an ignorant newbie; what does IRS mean in relation to cars?

Now, I don't know a lot about cars, but it makes sense to a newbie to say that oversteer just means you can turn more than when you understeer, right? So, if you're capable of oversteering, isn't that a good thing?

independent rear suspension.

it'll offer better handling due to it not allowing as much weight transfer to the outside wheel when cornering.

if you want an example of what I mean, take a pencil and lay it flat, then push down on the eraser really hard.

ideally to most, neither understeer or oversteer are wanted.

most incredibly fast well rounded cars have a very nuetral feeling to them.
