I was thinking about going with valvoline maxlife ATF fluid for the transmission and transfer case and pennzoil full synthetic for the engine. Also was thinking about peak extended life antifreeze for coolant. Not sure about the differential oil yet. Anyone have any recommendations? Dont really have a ton of money to spend on fluids but dont want to get cheap stuff either. this is for a 2002 qx4 with 116k miles. Thanks

If you don't have any prior maintenence history on the fluids, my personal preference is to use cheap fluids for the first flush - then redo everything in a few months. As in "supertech" stuff from Wal-Mart for the differential and transmission. Coolant should be a mixture of any silicate free antifreeze and distilled water (or premixed 50/50 if you prefer buying it premixed. I use the prestone or texaco orange dexcool stuff.

In Charleston you should be fine with a 60% distilled water, 40% antifreeze mixture.

Pennzoil platinum has a nice $15 rebate available on their web site on 5 quarts ($20/jug at wal mart) and appears to be a fairly well regarded oil at one of the popular oil forums. $1/qt. synthetic oil fits pretty much anyone's budget!

For the final fill, the oils you mentioned should be fine. I personally like the Mobil 1 ATF, and use M1 75W-90 gear oil in my Q. Don't forget to flush the brake fluid. Valvoline Maxlife seems to have the best wet boiling point in the readily available fluids.

Rather than count on a fluid being ultra primo better than just a good quality fluid.15 years ago I just decided to change oil every 90 days, atf, ps, brake, diff, and coolant fluids annually.

Obviously this was a good decision for my 323,000 mile 1990 Q45 purchased brand new.

From 22k until 150k [1999] I used 10w30 Mobile 1 [still changed every 90 days] but I was driving a lot of interstates then.

Had I know the future I probably would have kept using Mobile 1 for another few years as I've had some ring wear which expands and goes away after warm up.............low compression cold on a few cylinders.

Pretty much I've used Valvoline bulk 10w30 from 150k thru 250k when I changed to 10w40 by the can in 2005.
