usually most degreasers will work I have used Purple Power and Castrol Super Clean as well as Grease Lightning. These all work good on exterior motor.

That is what you are asking for is exterior engine degreaser?

those degreasers work well. don't try to use anything oil based because they will make a huge mess, they are also very flamable.

While we're on the topic, has anybody had any bad experience with Castrol Super Clean and their aluminum head?

Try Motul's Motoclean. It's a motorcycle cleaning product but works really well. Castrol superclean is good stuff, but I try to avoid it as much as possible on aluminum parts.

I personally have used Castrol Super Clean on my aluminum head, and it works wonders! Before, the cam side of the head had a golden varnish covering the entire surface, but a quick spray of Super Clean takes it completely off.

Thanks for the input, Touchdown. Quick spray, you say? What was the very longest you ever let it soak on the aluminum? Any side effects?

best low tox one ive ever encountered was por15 marine clean. works like magic at dissolving grease and grime but requires some scrubbing.

i wouldnt let anything soak on my enine longer than required to remove the grime, so start with a quick spray off and if that doesnt do it, then you can go longer, but be careful.

none of those are oil based, im just saying dont try to use mineral spirits or anything to clean it. all of the cleaners listed here are perfectly fine for use on your engine.

What kind of thing should I be careful with when I use these grime removers? Why shouldn't they stay on the painted surfaces and engine blocks longer than I need to use them?

The very longest I ever let it sit on there was about 5 minutes or so, but honestly, letting it sit for longer would just be pointless because all the grime and varnish came off pretty quickly.

All the same, I still wouldn't recommend letting it sit too long - it IS aluminum, after all.

you really dont want to leave anything on your engine longer then needed, if it gets the job done, why leave it on longer, only bad can come of it. if it sits too long, there is a possibility of it eating away at the paint, or pitting and etching the aluminum.
