Recirculate air without having A/C turn on automatically?

Is there any way to do this? I like to switch the air to recirculate when I approach a dusty area or a smelly old diesel MB, but sometimes I don't want the A/C to turn on.The manual doesn't seem to mention this.

No such option. You have to manually turn off the A/C when you hit recirculate. Most cars behave the same way as the intention is to reduce the humidity inside the car generated by our breathing.

How about turning the temperature up past the ambient outside temp?

Well, for the M, even you manually turn off the A/C, it will switch back to outside air mode (instead of recirculation) - it seems that you can not choose recirculation mode without turning on the A/C. I would not mind turn off the A/C manually, but it will force the A/C on if you want to use the recirculation mode.

Running in recirculate mode without the a/c compressor on to dry the air would lead to fogged up windows due to humidity given off by humans.....just look at all the older cars on the road even in cold climates with their windows all fogged because the drivers run in recirc. mode without turning on compressor to pull out the moisture.

Seems rather silly to try to defeat this feature in the Infiniti.

Yes, you are correct. As an ex-HVAC guy years back that makes sence. in a closed thermodynamic system under constant pressure this will happen. Just breath against a mirror and see.

You hit the nail on the head. I still struggle living Ga and driving my car first thing in the morning w/out heating up the windows - even when its 80 degrees outside.

When it's 70 degrees outside and you live in a very dry climate like me, there's no risk of windows getting fogged up. Even if the feature exists to override any human stupidity, why not have the A/C turn on automatically but be able to override it and still stay in recirculate mode? Oh well, I guess I will just have to live with this quirk.

The A/C will still remain on.

Exactly. Why would they allow override - Infiniti is trying to control us

Depends on how long you leave it on recirculate.....it will fog up eventually. Unless you are breathing through a snorkel vented outside the car.

To be fair you did say in your original post that you just switch temporarily for dust or diesel fumes.

Oh well i guess you'll just have to hit that one extra button to get back to your ac off/fresh air setting. Think of it as the Japanese imposing their love for calisthenics on you.

I'm also frustrated by this but like everyone else, ...I'm resigned that I can turn it on for just a sec if needed to get past the dust & smells. In the winter time, it probably helps to keep the system lubed and operational anyway.

I do like that the hvac system does not revert back to fresh with each time you start the car if it was turned off while in recirc mode. MANY other cars default to fresh every time no matter what.

This is true-but you won't be spewing out cold air if you keep it right @ the ambient or slightly above temp. I thought cold air was the problem. I guess this issue has more to do w/mileage than temperature regulation; AC on does use more fuel. But then these machines are gaz guzzlers @ birth!!
