Hello All

My Z recently failed a boost test due to Recirc valves needing upgrade according to my mechanic. It cost $299 to repair.
My Z seems to be running ok and was wondering if it is worth repairing. Will I notice a difference if i have this done.
Its a 1990 Z32TT with 107,000 miles.

Thanks Guys

Buy used OEM recircs for under $100 and DIY. Or find a different shop to install them. $300 is a raping.

How long have you used this mechanic? What error code is being produced? First time I have ever heard recircs failing. I would do some checking of codes on the computer first. Does it boost now?

I'd say the failed boost leak test could be a result of loose clamps on the recircs. He should only be testing up to 5 PSI anyway.

Yeah it seems to boost fine. Where are these valves located and i think if it was just loose clamps he would have tightened them.

They're part number 14483Y in that diagram. Location wise they're directly below the inner most part of each headlight. If you remove the center panel, and look left under the pass headlight you should see a sliverish valve. The driver side is mirror opposite, under the driver side headlight. They're kinda difficult to access with the bumper on, but far from impossible.

Thanks for your help. Is this something that needs to be done asap or can I wait and still drive the car?

Have you checked the recirc hoses and clamps? You may just need to tighten them down a bit. If it is leaking, then yes, you will notice a difference. If the recircs are failing by not working, then it can cause a very serious problem with compressor surge.

What did he say it was doing?

He didnt really say and I didnt ask due to my ignorance. He just said it failed a boost test. And i would think if it was something as simple as a loose clamp he would have tightened being that the front of the car was apart anyway.

I suspect he was performing a boost leak test. I would think it would most likely be hoses, not the valves. The valves tend to work well and having both of them fail at the same time, just doesn't make sense.

You can get a set of used recirc's fairly easily. Many pull them out and go with blow off valves instead. Z1 also is now selling silicone recirc hoses that should eliminate the cracking rubber on the OEM's. I would look into that. But first, pull the panel and give it a good visual. Make sure everything looks like it is tight and inspect the rubber recirc hoses for cracks.

Thanks for your help. Seems like the hoses would be a pita to get to, So i'll just ask my mechanic change the hoses nest time I bring the car in for service.
