im sure this is just a generic car problem. ill post if here, if the mods or anyone see it fit to move it, feel free..... anyways, on with my problem...

i got in my car the other night(2am) and it wouldnt reverse. i was able to shift it into reverse, but i wasnt able to feel the transmission shift into reverse. i had to put it into neutral and push it back enough, and it drove fine. then when i got into the car in the morning around 10am, it reversed fine, no problem. so i thought cool, no worries. then about an hour later, i try it again and it didnt work. so i was gettin really pissed off, and i slammed down the gas pedal and the engine reved like it should have, then the car peeled out in reverse, then it was good to reverse with, until i switched the gears. then later on in the day, it wouldnt move from 1st gear, so i checked the transmission fluid, it was badly low, so i put a quart in. reveresed fine after adding the fluid, drove fine after that. drove around a while, then it did the same thing again, wouldnt get out of 1st. added a few more quarts after that, there hasnt been any loss in transmission fluid since i added the 3 quarts in. but it still wont reverse unless i do the whole engine reving thingie.

any ideas???? maybe the transmission crapped on me??

that could be, because if the auto transmission is driven with no or very low fluid, the clutches (very different from manual) inside will tend to burn out, now it depends on how low the fluid was, although it sounds strange that ATF went down and once you filled it up it never went down again, but i would keep on checking and look under the car everytime i drive out

another problem that causes this could be that one of the transmission solenoids needs to be replaced or cleaned, i hope this helps, good luck

Have a good, non-chain local transmission shop do a flush, filter and adjust on your transmission. Tell them you were low on fluid.A J30's gearbox is not an item you want to play Hydromatic games with.

This is related and kind of unrelated, bear with me. There is a part on the gear selector lever which is essentially kind of like a rubber band that moves the selector through the transmission gearings. Years ago, I sue to park outside all the time. Overnight changes in temperature would make the selector stiff, to a point where one late October day, I couldn't put the J into reverse, to back the car out. It was a call to the dealer and they sent a tow truck (car was still under warranty). They replaced the part, and everything worked well again.

I don't remember the name of the part that they replaced. Part of your problem may be that part.
