ok so i put another KA in my 92 coupe last year and never recharged the AC and its hot as crap this year so i need AC. Question is how many cans of R134a do i need to charge the system from 0 psi to fully charged? the owner before me had did the retrofit so it can use R134a so i dont have to retrofit it, just charge it.

I'm pretty sure it's 32oz. That's what the required amount is for the single cam system at least.

You know using cans from the auto parts store isn't the proper way though, right? The right way is to have the system evacuated, vacuum tested, and then using a machine, have refrigerant shot through it.

Yep, it's not too expensive if you check around. Though the condensors can be too small on those retrofitted systems to get super cold air. Though I have heard rumor you can add an extra fan to help keep the condesor temps down. Anyways when I had my sytem recharged in my 95 I paid 70$ for a local shop to evacuate it, hold for 30 min to check for leaks, and then charge it.

There's some cool videos on youtube on how to check your A/C temps and trouble shoot a system by comparing evap, vent, lines, and condensor temps. Sidenote, but kinda cool.

yeah i know the right way is to take it to a shop and have them do it and i also know that when i put the new motor in i shouldnt have loosened the lines and let all the R134a out into the air. $70 dont sound too bad to get it done at a shop, most def going to have to look into that.

Yeah I was going to do mine myself but then looked at the guages were $30-$40 to make sure the amts were right, then another $20-$30 for freon so I just paid the shop that $70.

If you don't get it evacuated it will have all kinds of air trapped in with the refrigerant and it won't work worth a s*** and you'll need to have it all done over again. AC is pretty unforgiving as far as little mistakes go, if you get air in with your refrigerant the only way to get it out is to evac the whole system, losing your refrigerant, and starting over.

Once it's charged up you can add or top off yourself.
