I found this on the website. I havent tried to do this yet either.

www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/recall/results.cfm

Under defects and recalls. Says diodes in alternator may havebeen damaged when built. Failure of the diode causes a electricalshort which might cause a fire

Supposed to be able to take it to the dealer and get it replaced.Call Nissan 18006477261 or Infiniti 18883274236

Yeah, this was not only for the 98's. All 97-99 were susceptible to this. The dealer will inspect them for free, and if there is a problem, parts and labor are free. As an employee of aftermarket parts supplier, I direct every customer to the dealer before making that purchase.

Does it apply to 97-99 I30? I replaced the 99 I30 alternator 3 years ago but I still have the original (defective) one.

They dont provide the VIN# for the cars that need replacementI was hoping some folks who got theirs replaced might respond

Since the AC has to be moved to replace the alternator, I was afraidthe dealer might mess something else up replacing it

And if possible I would like to keep the old alternator

It may apply to the I30, but I'm not too sure. I do know, however, that you have to have the original part on the vehicle and the keep it as a core regardless.
