I noticed a new recall posted recently regarding the power steering units for 2011 Nissan Rogues. This is a vital component for vehicle safety so I'd recommend checking with your Nissan Service center right away to confirm if your vehicle is affected, and if so schedule to have the power steering replaced free of charge.

Details:

Technical Service Bulletin No. NTB11100

"Nissan is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall Campaign on certain Model Year 2011 Rogue vehicles to replace the EPS (Electronic Power Steering) control unit. This service will be performed at no charge for parts or labor. See this bulletin for further detail."

I need to stress the point "certain model year 2011 Nissan Rogues". Please check with your dealer first to confirm if you are affected.

Well they likely don't have the updated info yet, or the recall does not apply to your specific vehicle. You can show them he TSB bulletin at nissan-techinfo.com and there will be no dispute that the TSB exists. My guess is they know of the TSB but it does not apply to your vehicle - only certain 2011 Rogue's are affected.

Hmmm I wonder if it has anything to do with the constant whining of the pump when below -15? I'm due tuesday for my 2nd oil change so I will check it out.
Thanx for the update!

Really, I thought it was the solid feeling of turning the wheels for the first time at 32 degrees or below.
Then again I did get my steering rack replace too.

Mineral based PSF in the fluid reservoir often causes the power steering pump to whine or make other noises in cold weather. Replacing it with a synthetic PSF or ATF (depending on the manual's recommendation) will quiet it down.

Just a point of clarification, the Rogue has an electric power steering assist system, there is no hydrualic fluid to worry about, just a pure electic motor. The Rogue is actually still in the minority with this type of power steering system, most vehicles still use hydraulic systems but many manufacturers are starting to move towards electric because of the efficiency gains, and as an owner one obvious benefit is there is no fluid to worry about changing, or that can potentially leak and fail.

Ah, thanks for the info. I had read about completely electronic power steering systems before, I just wasn't aware that the Rogue (or any Nissan vehicle for that matter) had it yet.

The Nissan bulletin/campaign numbder is NTB11100. Use this number when speaking to your dealer.

Only certain 2011 models are affected. The dealer can determine this from the VIN number on your vehicle.

From the NHTSA website:
Make: NISSAN Model: ROGUE
Model Year: 2011
Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC. Mfr's Report Date: NOV 23, 2011
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 11V565000 NHTSA Action Number: N/A
Component: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM

Potential Number of Units Affected: 7,365

Summary:
NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2011 ROGUE VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM AUGUST 17, 2010, THROUGH OCTOBER 30, 2010. THE CIRCUIT BOARD MAY NOT HAVE BEEN INSTALLED IN THE CORRECT POSITION ON CERTAIN ELECTRIC POWER STEERING (EPS) ASSIST CONTROL UNITS. THIS MAY CAUSE ADDITIONAL STRESS ON THE SOLDER OF THE TERMINAL TO THE CIRCUIT BOARD RESULTING IN THE SOLDER CRACKING AND SEPARATING COMPLETELY FROM THE CIRCUIT BOARD.

Consequence:
AS THE CIRCUIT BOARD FAILS, THE POWER STEERING ASSIST FEATURE WILL STOP FUNCTIONING, INCREASING THE FORCE NEEDED TO STEER THE VEHICLE AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy:
NISSAN WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE EPS CONTROL UNIT IF NECESSARY, FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING DECEMBER 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

Notes:
OWNERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV .

I called the dealer again and they said they don't know anything about the TSB :tisk: . I gave the VIN number and they will return back to me on Monday.

Meanwhile, I checked the date of manufacture of my Rogue by looking at the sticker inside the car frame on driver's side. It says 11/10 (November 2010). So if the effected cars are manufactured between August 17 and October 30, mine may not be effected. What if it is manufactured on November 1st, which is one day after October 30 ?!?!? :frown:

Of course I will bug the dealer again... :dblthumb:

Nissan identifies these issues using VIN numbers so they will be able to tell you if your vehicle is affected or not.

This recall is fairly new so the dealer may not have information yet.

The issue IS NOT the steering rack. The problem is the electric power steering unit located underneath the dash.
