does anyone else have a seat belt retractor that works soooo slowly that you just throw it in the seat when exiting?

It's not uncommon. I think they have a lifetime warranty assuming your pre-tensioners aren't blown.

Lifetime! that would be impressive. do you think this would apply to multiple owners? how does one tell if pretensioners have fired?

If the pretensioners fired, the belts would be in a solid locked position and would not operate. The seat belt light would also be flashing. When the pretensioners fire it sounds like a gunshot and the car fills with "smoke" so you would definitely know if if happened. As for the retractor, any mechanical component of the seat belts is covered by a lifetime warranty, regardless of mileage or number of previous owners. The dealer replaces it free of charge then they are reimbursed by Nissan. Usually they dont like doing it because it is not profitable to them, but they are obligated to.They may try to say that the spring in the retractor is not covered, but stick with them on it to have it replaced.I retensioned the coil spring on the drivers side belt of my 94, but I don't recommend doing it if the pretensioners are in good shape. It involves opening the seatbelt housing and that will void the lifetime warranty.Good luck.Vandi.

i saw a tsb for my f50 and all they were going to do was sand down the ear of the belt holder where the belt goes in by the pillar, and put some tape on it, much like a scotch tape. and that was how they were going to eliminate slow retraction on my f50. it is lifetime warranty to my understanding that they have to fix it under warranty .

i had a lady that they did not warranty it. but read the warranty booklet and it states that all seat belt restraints were lifetime warranty by nissan. this was on a 99 quest. they try to get out of warranty as much as they can. it is more paper work for them tryong to get it in warranty, they have to justify it too.when they send the part back to nissan, and if nissan says it is not covered the dealership would get stuck with the bill.

thanx to all for that illuminating input. my nearest dealer is apx. 130 miles so i will try to schedule some other dealer only repair or service. i get to the mainland 2 to 3 times a year so i guess i will just tolerate the situation for now. man i love this forum. am currently trying to resolve some problems on my wifes 98 camry. this forum is so much more knowledgeble than toyotanation.com. she doesnt understand the frustration.
