Rebuilt my starter wiring issue

Stupid question, but.. which bolt on the solenoid do I hook the power cable to and which bolt do I hook the wire running from the base of the starter motor to? I tried one combination and when I hooked it up to power it started spinning freely so I disconnected it and I'm not sure how it should be wired.

Well, if you hooked it up one way and it started spinning on it's own, try the other way as chances are that way is correct.

I switched the positions and it's not spinning when it gets power, however I'm not getting a crank and the solenoid is getting hot. What does that mean exactly?
