you need to clock the dist, then set the timing. As for the smoking NO this is not normal unless you have a bunch of assy lube that is burning or got coolant in the cylinder or intake. It should go away if not you gots a problem, more then likely getting coolant into the intake or cylinder. It should have NO problems idling with the butterflies removed,...NONE mine are removed it idles just as OE with butterfies installed. Partial throttle is slightly different until you tune...
As far as idle at start up it is to do with OIL PRESSURE, you want to keep it up but not rev the engine to high, this is very important for NEW cams and rings were you have metal to metal contact the new parts generatealot of heat on initial start up so hold the RPM around 2000 to 2200RPM no more. This will give you goo flow and pressure without over heating all of those new parts surfaces
Crank mains and rods "Float" on a pressurized "film" of oil so not as important there, but engine warm up is. You have the tightest clearances the engine will ever see just after a rebuild so you need to let it warm up slowly and completly until it is past break in, not doing so is a easy way to damage that polished crank or scuff a bearing
