I've been trying to get my rebuilt KA to idle right but I cant seem to get the timing right it seems. I'm aware of the procedure to set the motor on TDC on the compression stroke for cyl #1, and how to align the dizzy up so that it is firing on #1 at the right point. Did all that a million times, and I still cant get the motor idling correctly.

Watching the timing marks on the crank pulley with a timing light, it looks like I'm in the vicinity (0 degrees is the 2nd mark to the left correct?), but the timing keeps changing along with the idle. I cant tell if the timing is changing because the idle speed is changing, or because the ECU is messing with it somewhere.

I read in a few places that you're supposed to unplug the TPS when setting timing, but havnt done that yet. Should that make much of a difference? The idle seems to be very erratic and all over the place.

Also the fuel in this car is about 4-5 months old (half tank was old, jsut filled the tank the rest of the way with new gas), so I am unsure if the problem is due to crappy gas or the timing, although timing seems more likely. Anyone know of a procedure for telling how bad old gas is? Poured in a glass cup, its got a yellowish color- not bad at all, and a decently strong odor.

If anyone can help I would really appreciate it.

Can't help, but you are right about the pulley mark. 0' is the 2nd one clockwise.

you do need to take out the tps, or the ecu wont lock the timing i believe.

first, with the car off, take out the tps, then turn on the car and if its idling high, adjust with the idle screw around the intake manifold(by where the brake booster line is), after you get the idle to 650 +-, adjust your timing, then when you get it, plug your tps back in and it should idle fine.

Got it to idle!!! Woo!!

Okay, the idle is a little weird though. It does a constant cycle, it'll idle at about 1500 (even though the engine is warm) for a minute or two, then drop down to almost stalling 100-200ish rpms for 10 seconds or so, then its back up to 1500. The cycle will go on and on without stop-- I just let the car idle for about 15 minutes like that.

Is this a "not pulling out the TPS to lock the timing" thing, or perhaps something else? Anyone seen this issue before?

no, this sounds more like a vacuum line thats leakin.

or it could also be that your IACV is bad or clogged.

Mine was hunting, but the fluctuation was more rapid and it would eventually stall. I don't know if it's fixed yet, I am still reassembling. What I found to be certainly wrong: bad oxygen sensor, a few cracked vacuum hoses, and the EGR was loose. The bolts securing it to the mani were loose where the gasket is. Dunno HOW the hell that happened, Ive never touched it and have had the car for like four years. Also, the BPT/EGR and whatever control solenoids (between the valve cover and firewall) were fouled.
