I just rebuilt my ka24de, put it in, wired it up, grounds ect. I have done this step before on a previous swap. This being my first rebuild I can't get my motor to start... Yes my timing is correct, yet my spark is good (even rotating the cap 180 degrees just to be sure). After several attempt to start I checked my compression on the front cylinder, at 70, I pored motor oil through the spark plug hole to help, now reading in the 160. I managed after using propane gas and the motor oil in all cylinders to get it to run for like ten seconds.

Followed by "put put pusshh". This seems like an awful lot of work to get a motor to start if it was built properly (by me). I used perfect circle rings and had the local motor shop give it a slight hone and check the block. I don't know if I broke a cylinder ring while installing them or is there some other possibilities. Tomarrow I have two choices, take the motor out dissemble once more and see if my piston ring is broken or try try again.

Talking to friends there seems to be to theories, mine and that on a start up of a freshly rebuilt motor compression doesn't matter because the rings haven't had time to seat properly and that if my ring was broken I would be getting a compression of like 5. Is this true and what do you recommend, what are your experiences with starting up fresh motors??? Anything would help because I don't honestly know what I'm doing enough to make an informed decision. So if anyone out in the great world of NICO could remove my clouds of ignorance I would greatly appreciate it. - Thanks

When I did my rebuild, the problem was my timing on the distributer, and a couple of taps on my ignition coil. and after that bam first try, it turn on.You said your timing was good, and your theory on the broken ring, could be right cause my compression was good on all cylinders, but before u take it out again check timing again, see if u have spark, also check to see if your getting fuel. This is the steps I did when it wouldn't start. See if there some more responses, maybe someone else has similar problems.

Yep, getting spark and fuel, double checked timing, pretty hard to mess that up on a ka... But thanks for your input. You had the right compression and that sort of hints at a possibility. That compression test was done prior to it start up while you were still trouble shooting it?

yeah, cause the first try it just turn over but wouldn't start so we check the compression and it was good on all four,so we did the timeing again and it was good, the distributer was off by a tooth, after it was set turn the key and it turn on the first try.

Well I just took the motor out and rebuilt it, thought maybe it was a broken ring, nope. So I was retorqueing the head back on with my mechanic friends fancy digital torque wrench, (that beeps when the level has been met) Well it "clicked", and then "clicked twice in rapid succession. Moral of the story never trust a used torque wrench, after buying a new one and going through every bolt once more. Motor starts, runs and has between 195 to 200 psi on all cylinders. WHAT A PAIN IN THE ***!!!
