I agree with the above posts. If you just drop the car off and ask for the engine to be rebuilt, look out! Labor costs will easily exceed the cost of parts. If you have *any* interest in learning something, do as much work yourself as you are capable of! I suggest finding a friend/family member who has done it once before. Get them to help you through the process - so what if you feed them a $50 bill here or there, or beer and burgers.I would not attempt a full rebuild without either prior experiance or doing your research/planning.
As far as remanned engines go, it seems hit or miss. Reman. mfg's tend to use *remanned* parts, which may or may not be good. I personally would rather pick 'n choose my own parts... I have had very bad experiances with GM crates... My GrandAm Quad4 had a persistent head gasket leak, and my Dad's had to return his crate fiero engine *twice*! Good thing is you usually get a decent warranty.
If you do have a shop rebuild it, do you research about them!-Slip
