hey guys. im doing a 280z build and right now im building the motor. I am looking to run around 350-400 but I know I'll want more, so while the motor is out i figured i'd beef it up.

Here are my plans.

pistonsnew manifolds (top mounted turbo)rodscamshaftvalve springsfuel railinjectors (740 or 800)sleeves (maybe)ect...

here is my question, im not buying everything at once, and i figured that i could build everything internally with the cash i have now, run the stock turbo, and just install a new turbonetics when i have the cash.

is that fine? or do i need to upgrade the turbo at the same time as i upgrade all the internals?

You can run whatever turbo you want.

i came here and asked, because my buddy who knows this engine and is helping me with the build wants the turbo first, and i figured i didnt NEED to upgrade just yet. its gonna be top mounted too, so the install of the turbo after the motor is installed shouldn't be too bad.

another quick question, can the 1975 280Z differential stand up to a built SR20 @ 20-25 lbs?

He's building an SR. This would be the place to ask. I wouldn't expect the Z guys to know much about an SR.

Since you're looking to hit the upper 300s (which in a Z is more than plenty), I would recommend building the motor first. 400 is the average power rating an SR can put the wheels before things begin to break. And I mean average, as I've seen blocks go above that, and blow apart below it. It's all in the fuel management.

To me, it's a little cart leading the horse if you're planning on building the block for power longevity by making it lay down the power first. However, with a good tune, you can make a stock block SR hold that amount of power. One thing to remember is you're using a junkyard motor. You're taking a gamble if you try to slap a turbo on it and push some big numbers without doing some prep work first.

One of my friends has a built up 280z. Bored the L28 out. I think it's rated asa 3.0L now, not sure. And he has a turbonetics ball bearing turbo on it. It only puts down a little over 350, but in that car, it absolutely roasts tires, and is a blast to drive.

yea. i definitely know what you mean about fuel management.

the motor, transmission, and ECU was cheap. $1000. After taking it apart found the motor to be in quite good shape. Stock turbo is amazingly good. When you say, "You're taking a gamble if you try to slap a turbo on it and push some big numbers without doing some prep work first." what do you mean exactly by prep work?

sorry if i sound like a n00b

you need a more detailed parts list. listing the word manifold or rods, isnt really a parts list.

if you want to stay in the 300 - 350hp range

bottom mount:

- garrett gt28rs is good for that- and a garrett s15 gt28

top mount:

- BorgWarner K26- garrett t3/t4 with a modest a/r

and so on and so forth.

I hope this helps but respectively you havent chosen any parts. why is this mechanic asking for the turbo selection first? he doesnt need that to build the motot to your expected power/torque, and then chose a turbo that delivers it.
