Does anyone know where I could pick up a book on rebuilding the ka24de with torque specs for all the bolts and studs. Does the run of the mill haynes/chilltons books cover this?

Get a Factory Service Manual. I don't think the generics (hayne's etc.) go into engine rebuilds.

Actually the Chiltons has a whole section on how to rebuild the motor.

But the FSM usually works better.

im rebuilding a KA24de also.. i just want to replace all the gaskets, o-rings and seals. im not gonna mess with new pistons , rods, valves, etc..... if im just replacing the gaskets and o rings, is it just a " take out old, and put in new " procedure or do i need to take it to a shop for resurfacing or any of that ? this is my first rebuild. thanks. it's a '92 w/ 190k miles . to be used as a daily driver. nothing special, maybe I/H/e later.

For most gaskets like the intake manifold, throttle body, header, exhaust donuts, it's just a take off the old, clean off the surface, put a new one on. If you're thinking about putting on a new headgasket though, it would be a good idea to take your head to a machine shop to have it resurfaced. that makes sure that the head is perfectly flat and the gasket will seal correctly to it.

It definately wouldn't hurt to regrind valves and valve seats. Good idea to adjust valves w/shims for valve lash, replace piston rings, crank+rod bearings, get a metal head gasket, ect. If I were rebuilding an engine, I'd take it completely apart to see EXACLY what I'm working with, so that way I know what parts are still good, and what parts I need to buy. Then I'd evaluate the condition of my block and head, to see if the cyls need machining/honing, or block decked ect. I work on cars all day long mind you so I'd strip/build it myself. The only labour I'd pay would be to a machine shop.

Stipping the engine all the way down to at least evaluate is definately the best way. More expensive right now, yes. But going cheap now could cost you ALOT more down the road. I assume you'd like a new engine with years of reliable usage, not one you have weak points in.
