As some of you know I would rather save money by rebuilding something. I spend time but gain knowledge. Anyways last week I took apart my Right Rear door check.
To remove the door check get a hammer and wrap it in tape. Or use a rubber mallet (Mine is at work). When I removed it I found two roller bearings and three rubber pieces. Of course the metal case that holds it all together is two pieces of metal pressed together. So one must bend back the four tabs carefully.
I cleaned the metal with POR 15's Marine Clean. I cleaned the rubber with Ru Glyde ($15 at NAPA Auto Parts). Then I applied ShinEtsu ($17 at any Honda Dealer) to all the rubber pieces (Over priced silicone lube) The bearings and the rail was coated in Mobil 1 wheel bearing grease ($8 at Auto Zone).
I put it back together carefully then put the two piece case on a vice to hold it (So nothing slips out of place) Then I pressed the tabs together with large pliers.
When I put it back on the car (Without installing the door panel) I was disappointed with the results. The thing worked like before I "Rebuilt" it. The door is still some what hard to open. Maybe when I put the door panel back on the added weight will help.
No pictures because I used a nylon brush on a rotary tool and I messed up one of the plastic cages that holds one of the two bearings in place. I doubt that has anything to do with it as the damage was minimal.
