id like the advice of people who have done this before. i have very little mechanical experience, but a whole lot of free time. do you think realistically i can rebuild an engine? i want to buy a used KA24E, but would feel safer rebuilding it before i turbo it.

If you have very little mechanical experience then don't attempt it. There are too many things that have to be precise like torque specs and clearances, that have to be checked and re-checked for the engine to run reliably. I consider myself to have a good amount of mechanical experience with cars. I even rebuilt a small block V8 in autoshop class when I was in high shcool, that ran when I was done with it, but I still wouldn't want to attempt to rebuild the engine in my own car. The thing is I don't know all the little tips and tricks of engine assembly that an established machine shop would. So the advice I give you is to leave the job to your local machine shop. It may seem like it just slapping things together with bolts and studs, but in reality it's much more than that.
