Hi All,

Just picked up a 5spd trany with ~200K mi on it. I want to rebuild this before I put it in the car; here are the questions:

1. Is this something I can do on my own?2. Where so you get parts for the trany?3. What parts hould be replaced? bearings, syncros, gears, shatfs, shift forks??4. What would a reasonable cost range be for s shop to do the work? lees new parts of course.

Thanks

1) Most likely not, if it's your 1st time. 2) OEM3) Bearings + synchros, at least.4) +$1000

...

If I were you, I'd find another with lower miles to use.

The trans are cheap and plentiful...no need to rebuild, especially with what it costs. You could buy a 50,000 miles trans for $250...and kill it in a year, then buy another...and still be $500 to the plus, as compared to one rebuilt one.

Try the one you got, it may be smooth and work great for years to come.

Or take the sure bet, and find a low-mile trans from the junyard...with a warranty.

orion, I have a little experiance with transmitions. I took a class so I know parts what they do plus I have compleatly dissembled one on my own, got all the parts mixed up and confused, then figured it out again re-asembled and had everything working...my teacher would talk about shimming the transmition and how if you set it all up to factory specs. We however didnt talk about how to shim the trans. IIRC it was done with the thickness of snap rings on the center support?(or at least I think it was on the toyota W55 I had). Re-shimming the trans wouldnt require a press and would be faily simple as long as you knew what you were doing right? not something Im looking to do tomorrow but If I ever have to replace the one in my s13. Since I think you already summed up the answer to this thread you mind sharing any knowlage you have on shimming the trans back to factory specs?

ewittiner I think this is one of those If you didnt know what it takes you probably dont have the stuff to do it type of situations. Unless you have a hydraulic press and an array of pullers you would probably are best to just buy a good enough one from a junk yard. Manual transmition rebuilding is not extreamly complex but It can get confusing if your not careful to keep track of were everything goes, and it does require some special tools...

How do you take the gears out of the transmission case? I removed the rear extension and separated the adapter from the transmission case, but I can not get the gears to come out. I need to replac ethe bearing on the counter shaft.

Please help!!!!!!

Can you take pics for me from a few different angles of the shafts and gear locations?I dont think Its your average DIY job... your gonna need a set of pullers and a hydrolic press to get them back on
