Because of the close tolerances that are nearly impossible to duplicate yourself, its better and sometimes more cost effective to get a JDM takeout. One NICO member, "Forecast" (Daniel) did a rebuild and sold the vehicle, so its hard to say how long it will last since he no longer owns it.

There should be an old thread in the archives about it, or you can look him up and email him I guess.

forecast did a really good job but on parts alone, the money he spent was as much as buying a good low-mile take out engine, not to mention <tons> of time he spent in addition.

It is generally accepted here, and elsewhere, that a used engine will also be in better shape ,than many locally rebuilt ones despite the greater cost of the rebuilds.

In adtition new long blocks and short blocks pop up on ebay every once in a while (still need to attach and pay for ,accesories in those cases)

And if money truly is no object, contact some of our Infiniti parts sponsors, brand new long blacks can still be bought maybe even complete engines.

Here is a link to just one of our nissaninfiniti parts sponsors they alos give discounts to Nico members:

The engine is in Socal. I'm sure you could arrange to have a look-see if you're interested in it. It is brand new.

It's a distance, but Jerry Tucker in San Diego would be the man to talk to about JDM swaps.

Bottom line like everyone said just parts price alone for a proper rebuild negate the positive of doing a rebuild. Just get the JDM motor. You will probably spend $1000 to $1500 on the motor itself. Then another bunch of money in parts. In other words you must really love your Q if you are going that route.

THANKS, FRED DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THAT WEBSITE. MY INFINITI HAS 167,000 MILES. I JUST WANT MY CAR DAMN NEAR BRAND NEW LIKE WHEN I GOT IT. THE MONEY I WOULD SPEND ON A NEW INFINITI WOULD BE A FRACTION OF THE COST FOR A NEW ENGINE & TRANSMISSION FROM WHAT I SEE ON THE WEBSITE. THX

I lucked out {IMHO] and found a 1994 still in the crate from Japan motor - never ran before . sealed up tight and cosmolene [sp?] all over the place. I used my 1991 top end [had the valve guides done] nd bolted alll my accessories etc on. Timing chains were tuff, but worked. Motor runs great - except for a mysterious minor miss. Its off to the dealer for a consult - next 48 hrs.

It can be done.

Joe from everthingNissan confirmed that the crank, rods, pistons, bearings and BLOCK are the same 1991 - 1996 [as i recall] Heads and intake and obvious accessories are where the variances come into play.

I think Q45 tech mentioned the 94 had a couple of other accessory and sensor items on the block as well.

There is one sensor under the plenum on my car we do not have a electrical harness for, nor mention of in the 1991 manual that we can find. Im still researching this.

Jackson ... dude a member has a 1994 long block in a crate [in California] - new never ran for a great price, If all your doing is swapping wiring HARN(i) and accessories off your car onto this - that might be a good deal for you!!!

If money is no object why not go to Jim Wolf? He could really trick out your motor by doing things like Swain coat everything! You could also optimize the engine ala Sport Compact Car 300zx - Why not put better/lighter wt pistons, conrods, shave/balance the crank, extrude hone intake and exhause manifolds - couldn't one do anything with an aftermarket ignition system (Tech 2/3 or what ever they are called)?

I would try all this if I had the funds - go ahead, let me vicariously live through you! Be sure to dyno before and after!

It may depend on what kind of 'rebuild'you are after-serviceable or OEM new tolerances.? How you manage the time element (both elapsed and labor) is a big factor. I could easily see 40 hours for a rebuild just to disassemble, clean, measure and inspect, and reassembly without having to 'fix' anything other than new bearing inserts. A 'serviceable--within wear limits) overhaul would probably just take new bearings and rings. Valve guides? If the engine is worn--like camshaft lobes--it ain't worth it. Buy a JDM takeout.
