I know it's fairly common but my trans has a tendancy to grind a bit going into 1st & 2nd when cold and when I shift very fast.

I'm just wondering if it might be a good idea just to have it rebuilt when I put in the clutch. I'd hate to pull it out twice.

Anyone know how much this costs?

Wow, that's a lot of $$!!!

Edub, mine (and probably every other KA) does the same thing....Switching to synthetic Redline MTL gear oil actually helped quite a bit...as does a heavier shift knob (ie, stock). What kind of gear oil are you using now?

I'd imagine you could just find another transmission or two for the price of a rebuild.. mine used to grind pretty bad, and I couldn't get into first if I was moving at all.. I switched to Redline MT-90 and feels so much better.. still a little notchy into 2nd sometimes, but having a b&m shifter doesnt' help.. I'd change your fluid first off, unless you've tried that.. then consider finding a transmission from a low mile KA.

I put in good oil when I installed the B&M. Finding a good low mile trans here in Detroit might be tuff. People mostly buy domestics here. But I appreciate the suggestion - I will look around.

Is it possible that my clutch system needs to be bled or something?

if its only 1st and 2nd gear, sounds like synchro problems. if its all gears, then its probably your clutch or along that line. but your better off finding a junkyard or used transmission, since i assume its only 1st and 2nd gear that your having the problem with, as a cheaper route.

Good point. But, is a junkyard trans going to be any better?

at one time i had three spare trannies.....the origional went out and now i'm down to two....but the one i have right now is going to last a long time....just get spares......they are cheap....alot cheaper that getting a rebuild....spend that money on a clutch and such

Mine doesn't like 2nd or reverse, so when I get my project engine done, I want to have a good transmission too. I was thinking of rebuilding mine, does Nissan sell a kit, or do I need to hunt through the parts catalog to piece the necessary bits together? On a side note, is it better to pull the engine and transmission together when I install the new engine (in case I decide not to rebuild it yet... space is an issue right now), or if I just pull the engine out, how difficult would it be to mate the new one up to the still installed transmission?

You will certainly have to seperate the motor and trans when you pull the motor.

I don't think rebuilding a transmission is a job for an amature. I could be wrong.
