I am rebuilding my ka24e and I was wondering if anyone else has attempted the rebuild by themselves. I am going to have the machine work done professionally, but I am thinking that I will reassemble the block on my own. I was wondering if anyone else had done this? I want to know if I need to control the temperature in my workroom as I assemble the short block and if the tolerances on the main bearings are hard to attain? Also who has good rebuild kits available? I am rebuilding an engine that had a blown headgasket, overheated and blew its rings. Besides boring and new pistons are there any other caveats to look out for? Also what is the best way to clean the intake manifold of all of the carbon, oil and burned antifreeze.thankschad

if it over heated Chad i would looked closely at the head too to see there is any damage to it. i use meguirs all purpose cleaner to clean my intake mani as it leaves no residue. call nissan motor sport and get sport bearings they are better than the stock bearings cuz they hold some oil during high g manuvers.

NonChlorinated brake cleaner works the best for cleaning grease and grime. You'll have no oily residue after either.

I've blown a few RB's(5) in the last 3 years. George is dead on about inspecting the head. You might want to have a machine shop put it on a jig to make sure it isn't warped. You'll also want to make sure all the water and oil jackets in the head and block are flushed. If your changing all the bearing you should be safe. Just make sure the bearing races are all smooth and the oil jacket holes are not clogged.

You should be able to get all the info from Nissan without to much trouble. I've never had to turn a crank, If I ever had that much engine damage I always changed it out.
