Hey guys, I just have some rebuild questions I hope you can answer for me. Keep in mind im not a real noob or anything like that, I just want to comfirm my thoughts...

When rebuilding teh kad-e what needs to be done to the "head and block"? put aside the internal parts like pistons, rods, etc. I know those.

So I need to have the block hot tanked, bored out (I got pretty high mileage), and honed? (what is honing?). Is there anything on the list I left out? Keep in mind I just listed the nessercary machining things needed to be done for a usual KA-T rebuild.

Also what other things can be done? like port and polish etc? Of course its not nessecary for a daily driver, im just curious.

thanks

You should also get the block decked and the head resurfaced (so everything is level, assuring proper gasket seating and fitment). Honing is basically like a re-surfacing of the cylinder walls. It makes sure there are no lips, deposits, burrs, or any of that bad stuff. A lot of times when rebuilding a motor, you only need to hone, not bore.

thanks man aprecaite the help, so does getting the "block decked and resurfecing the head" just really means smoothing down the surface for a good seal? Whats the difference between honing and boring? I need to bore out my clylinders .020 over to run the pistons from the ams rebuild kit so I have a good seal. As my engine is pretty high mileage.

Thanks

Resurface the head to a 16Ra finish or better. The exhaust side can definitely use some porting work.. But don't bother if you are just gonna do an "S13 dual exhaust cam" setup later on. Magnaflux couldn't hurt.. Have them check the block for distortion.. If it is distorted (really unlikely) you will probably need a line hone or you could just find another block.. Make sure you bring them the spec sheet for your pistons so they know what kind of hatch pattern is needed for your particular rings to seat properly. Chase all the passages. Make sure you bring the upper front timing cover when you have the head resurfaced. Have a valve job done.. You can go on and on.. I guess what I should have really asked is "How much power do you want out of this engine?" or "What is your ultimate setup gonna be on this engine?"

Yeah get the valve guides and seals replaced. Youll need to bring your cams to the machine shop with you, and some of the upper bearing caps so they can adjust valve lash.Resurfacing the head just make sure that the surface is flush and not warped or anything, insuring a good head gasket seal.

The best question is what kind of a budget do we have to work with? From there we can pick out the best things to have done and what you can do yourself.
