The problem with rebuilding a Q engine [to brand new specs] is the time required, speciality tools required, and oem parts GREATLY EXCEED the cost of a used JDM JUNKYARD engine even with the necessay updates to make it reliable [new chain guides, swapping exhaust manifolds, resealing valve covers, new plenum hoses, and new knock sensors and harness].
We charge $4400 to do the swap job correctly because selecting the best available JDM engine requires a visit to the wholesaler [who will allow returns if you find problems when valve covers, front cover, oil pan are removed].
It takes about 25 hours to select, restore, and swap in a JDM engine.
$1,000 for engine, $1,100 for new parts, $2125 labor, $150 sales tax.
There are junkyards that just swap a used engine [don't change a thing] for maybe $2500 but the whole exercise is not to have to deal with engine for years................this rarely happens if you don't do guides, reseals, new plugs and hoses and oil pan reseal clean.
