I am faced with making this decision as my 92 q,s needs an engine, what are the pros and cons of doing either and how much am I looking to spend?

you are in Georgia.....very lucky for you. Take the car to T3 in Atlanta who specializes in Q45's and they will put in a JDM takeout and do the chain guides as well. If you are a DIYer then maybe they can locate a good clean JDM takeout for you for a fee.

I have never heard of anybody successfully rebuilding the Q45's engine due to the very very tight tollerences and specs that are more precise than most machine shops have capability of.

One man did it, Daniel (forecast" on NICO) on his 90-93 Q, but then he sold it immediately after so there's no way to know how it went. I think he said total shop time was 35 hours.

Heheh, you're not only in Georgia, you're in Smyrna, where T3 is located - right across from U-Haul by 285. Call 'em. They're specialists in Infiniti and Lexus - best work in the area - LOT's of experience and good rates. They've literally worked on hundreds of Q45s, and many engine replacements.

Good news-used engines are getting cheaper, I only paid $600 for my last one.

Bad news-your car is not worth what it would cost for labor and parts.

Not a DIY job IMHO. I would recommend T3 or someone that guarantees the work and has done it many times.
