I have a block completely tore down, but I found out from the previous owner that it spun a bearing. Not sure if it was main or rod, but a machinist told me that it would be a bad idea to use it. Is this true?

I throught that they could fix it, but if its that big of a deal, i might just replace the block. I dont want to have my engine fully built to find out I have bearing problems.

It would be nice to use this one though...

if the machinist saw the damage and recommended against rebuilding it, I'd do what he says. If he just said replace it without looking at it, it could be rebuildable, take it to another machine shop.

Yeah, no one saw it. I personally could not see any damage at all when i removed the bearings. I'm sure some stuff the human eye isnt capable of seeing. Anyways, it was over the phone. I dont know the person either, thats why i came here to check.

have a machine shop look at it, but chances are if you dont see any marks and your fingernail doesnt catch on the journal/cap surfaces its fine to reuse. just have the right sized bearings

You should have the machine shop check for cracks in the journal where the bearing was spun. Depending on how bad it was the heat could have caused some damage. You may have to bore it out slightly and use an undersized bearing. A machinist should be able to tell you whether it's worth fixing or not.
