Im almost ready to start my spring late winter project and Im debating on what to do. Im debating whether I want to:

-After market pistons with gtr rods build
-fully built bottom end
-OEM rebuild
-Neo or rb25det longblock

Im trying to somewhat save money so that I can spend my money in other areas like the fuel system and cosmetics. Whats everyones opinin?? OEM is the cheapest but my hp goals this year was mid 400whp to 500whp max...

For that low of HP, OEM rebuild.
If you could snag some GTR rods & pistons for the right price, you might consider them.

I have a used set of 26 rods and pistons I pulled out of my motor that I am not using. You can look at my build thread for pics of them.

After seeing each RB (yes I've seen an RB20 do it too) do 500-600WHP on OEM rebuilds, Id say that would be fine.

Just for piece of mind I'd go with forged pistons though. Quite a bit tougher then stock, lighter and of course NEW. And I'd grab the GTR rods just because they are the same dimensions just stronger. Its a cheap might as well.

Jeff at full race is at 711HP (can't figure out for sure if that;s flywheel or RWHP) on a stock rebuild of an RB26. Basically it has a MLS head gasket, ARP studs every where, Good bearings, new oil pump (donno what kind) and OEM pistons, rods, and every thing in good shape.

And a high flow, low pressure turbo.

With the right setup, a GOOD TUNE any RB in good shape should do 400-500rwhp.

Rustspec: Thats the route I intended to go but doing that would still set me back like 2 grand if not more. I found a Neo motor/at transmission for like $1500. Was considering this purchase b/c this would allow me to upgrade to something bigger that 256's in the future. Neo heads are hard to come by.

Are you rebuilding as a preventative/upgrade thing or is something broken? If you've already got a good running motor, I'd buy a bare block/crank/head and slowly build that up while waiting for your current set up to blow. That's was my plan for several years, but no matter how much I beat the snot out of my stock RB25, I couldn't pop it :woot: If it were me, I wouldn't waste my time with the Neo. They are better in stock form than an older RB25, but when you start modifying them, the only advantage is solid lifters and RB26 rods. Neo specific parts though are more expensive. Aftermarket rods/piston/cams + solid lifters > Neo motor for not much more (plus it will be freshly rebuilt.)
