Well, I dropped my damn crank pulley today and it broke a 4mm x 20mm long piece off one side of it. Do you think this could be rebalanced? damnit.

Well, I was looking at it. The piece that chipped off is such a small amount of mass compared to the whole mass of the pulley. I'm starting to think that it will not matter at all. Anyone have any input?

I dunno, that's sketchy. If anything is out of balance on the end of the crank, it is going to wear your #1 main bearing. I'm sure someone on here has one around the garage. Otherwise, there's always ATI and other manufacturers.

You're probably right. I don't know enough about the subject to make a decision on whether or not it would be safe. I'm looking for a stock one though, because I'm not trying to spend the huge $$ on an ATI unit right now. Do you think a machine shop could shave the chip down and then balance the unit by shaving off an equal amount of material opposite the chip?

Is it even a balancer?? or is the rubber their to reduce vibration? Just thought I have seen this in the past I also have one with a corner knocked off lol

it is there to dampen harmonic vibrations only, which is still very important. however, it's not balanced as part of the crank/rods/pistons assembly. the mass of the pulley is just huge compared to the mass of the piece chipped off. I'd say 6000g for the pulley and maybe 1-2g for the chip. maybe i can go find a scale...

I'm going to do some research and a little math and see if it would be viable for me to run the pulley as is, have it balanced, or just get another one.

If you are going to keep the pulley, I'd at least have some material added to the broken area if you can have it done without melting anything.

i have the same problem, but mine has several large chunks missing on one side. i've got a price request in for an oem replacement at japanparts, i'll post their price when they get back to me. i think i'm also going to contact my machine shop to see if they'd balance it. what would be a reasonable cost for a job like that - anybody?

I wouldn't think more than an hour worth of labor to do that kind of work. So what ever their rates are where you go.

the dampner is balanced by itself from the factory. I would A get a used one from somebody with a blown up rb. Or B have a shop rebalance that one. A local shop here wanted around $40 to balance just the dampner if i remember correctly. I just had my crank balanced with the clutch, dampner and all other parts for $130. I just put the new oilpump drive on so i figured it was best to have that done. The $130 included micro polishing my main and rod journals so i was ready for a new set of bearings. If your using the outside of the chipped damner it might blow the belt off and cause problems down the road. I bet you can get a used one for under or around 50 shipped.

Japanparts wants $175 for a new one, shipping will probably bring it to around $200.

if you look at the diagram, it's part number 12303, not 12033, that is a typo. i'm still going to look into balancing the one i have if done for less than $75.

It is kinda like running one of your tires 10psi less than the others--Not enough to notice right away but definitely has long term consequences. Hold out for a good one.

is the oem replacement for $175 worse than a "stronger" aftermarket version for $500+? maybe a better question is: is the aftermarket version worth $500?

might you just find a used one. There are tons of people who claim they blow up there rb's. Then they just buy a new short or longblock.

Let me see how much the local junk yard wants for one with them pulling it. I'm lazy.

Okay. DriftingisLame told me it was chipped before I bought it and I even saw a picture, but I guess I didn't pay enough attention. No biggie though.
