A local Saturn dealer has a 2002 I35 Sport with almost everything (no nav, no chrome rims) and 63K on the odometer. The asking price is about $16000. Would I be making an unreasonable offer at $10000 + trade (1995 G20t with 160K)? And if this isn't a good offer, what would be? Also, since this car is not being offered by an Infiniti dealer the warranty is essentially nonexistant (MA 90 day warranty). Could I purchase an extended service plan from an Infiniti dealer on this car?

Kelly BlueBook puts the trade-in value of a 95 G20 with that milage at $1900.

Give it a try though...you can always offer more if you're comfortable with it.

KBB shows it to have a dealer resale value of $16,625 in your area, so they are actually asking a bit lower than that value. I doubt they would take $10k + tradein.

I don't really trust KBB as more than just a general guideline. From what I've seen from being on the other side of the negotiating table (I sell cars during my breaks from school), trade-in value can be heavily affected by the appearance of the car. Even if the car has high miles, if it looks good and runs well it will get a higher tradein value. The other thing I'm figuring in to get the $10K+ trade number is that there is probably a few thousand dollars of profit built into that price. So figure $16000 - $2500 (at least, I've had it appraised as high as $4500 in the last few months) for my trade - $2000 in dealer markup puts me at $11500 + trade. And they'd still probably make $500 on that deal.

Let us know if you can swing it. That would be awesome.

I talked to one of their salespeople today, and he understandably didn't know much about the I35. He also let it slip that they've had the car on their lot for several months and that they've been reducing the price by $500 every month until it sells. Not a smart move on his part....if that was supposed to make me eager to buy it immediately it had the opposite effect. I think I'm going to wait and see what they do with the price...I'm also going to keep looking since I'm not planning on an immediate purchase and would prefer something that has the Infiniti Certified warranty to 100K.

Update: Talked to a sales manager at the dealer today and he said the Saturn no-negotiations price policy applies to pre-owned cars at this dealership to. I told him that if they don't want to deal, I'm not interested. Time to keep looking for the elusive I35 Navi...
