What I did when shopping around for my 2009 S model is I contacted all the dealers in my area. I asked them for quotes via email only, I refused to come in and "talk" to them until I had something in print! What did then was to bounce prices off one dealer to another to knock down the price as much as possible. What I found was the dealers in the less populated areas (here at least) appeared more willing to do a deal vs the city dealers at the lots that seen more people pass through. When I did go to a dealer I went in prepared, well as prepared as a first time buyer could be. I brought in a number of quotes from other dealers and their own quote beating those prices. All in all I walked out the door about 2 hours later having paid all in tax, title, tag, dealer fees etc.. $13,500 for a brand new 2009 Versa S Hatch.
Another option might be to look at a place like carmax? I just did a search and found a 2010 SL in Atlanta with 9,000 miles on it for just under $15k. I've not used carmax myself so I can't say if they are any good at all but a car with so few miles and that new would still have factory warranty on it.
