NONE of you have mentioned Starblazers yet, I am most disappointed. The one show that arguably got my generation hooked on anime (not Robotech, that was later, and not Speed Racer, that was too silly).
Who can forget the Argo & kick-total-a$$-with-one-shot Wave Motion Gun? Sandor removing his legs and arms? Earth blasted into a radioactive wasteland? A cartoon with a serious, very dramatic plot, way ahead of anything else kids were watching on the tube at that time.
Am I really that old that nobody else watched this show? it was like 1981-82, folks. Back when our beloved cars were still named "Datsuns".
EDIT: With regard to MTV, nobody has mentioned Aeon Flux either...one of the most intricate and dark cartoon series ever made. Kicked off in MTV's attempt to be as uncool as possible.
EDIT 2: With regard to puppet shows, TV Funhouse. (see MTV, above, only replace Comedy Central)
