I'm going to change the rear end oil in my 95 Q45 and was wondering what people use out there.

Usually synthetic, like 75W-90 M1.

I used the same weight synthetic. Any name brand synthetic or petrol-based will work fine but my differential is quieter with the synthetic. It's about 1 3/4 qt. capacity so do it twice with a warm up drive in between to get all the gunk out.

AS long as its GL-5 thats whats most important. Mobil1 is good. you will need to buy 3 bottles as you need 2.5 to fill it up.

You only need 2 "bottles" {quarts} as it will only take aprox 1.5 to refill-this is THE MOST CRITICAL component in the entire drivetrain where a full synthetic oil pays big dividends-operating temp is significantly lower than with dino juice, and more importantly MPG and power transfer is much improved over the dino, especially when cold! Try Redline or Amsiol if you can stomach their tupperware/amway/herbalife pyramid marketing techniques

Wes this is THE SECOND time I have to correct you on this issue, lay off the sauce! It is 2 & 3/4 pints or almost 1.5 quarts,as I said in my earlier post-no physical way in hell you could refill with 3 1/8 quart !!!!!

Well it depends on your version of "correct". If by, give information different than what is accepted, then thats fine. But, my information is correct and I stand by it. you can do what you like.

I am sorry though, it is 3 1/8 PINTS but my 1.5L thing stands... They come by the liter if memory serves so its a non-issue. So both of us were wrong, but I at least had one figure right!!!

I used Agip ROTRA LSX 75W-90 100% SYNTHETIC last time I did mine. It was the only brand my mechanic had on his shelf that day.

ROTRA LSX («limited slip») is a GL-5 fully SYNTHETIC multipurpose gear oil, fortified with EP additives. Its formulation assures the most efficient lubrication even in the presence of very high speed sliding stresses, intermittent loads and frequent gear shifting, as is typical of race driving. Superior performance for all gear boxes requiring a GL5 oil (Alfa transaxles, for instance).

Back on topic, I use 75w - 140 Royal Purple in TX for summer heat.

Will do Amsoil next time, or M1 extended range.

I had the same problem confusing the size of the containers a while back and Dennis called me on it.

just get 2 quarts of the best synthetic gear oil you can stomach and refill till it oozes out the fill plug-you will have about 1/2 of the second quart left over to put in the curio cabinet next to the Waterford stemware and see how long it takes to hear the other half blow her gasket!I am a big believer in using Redline for this application due to the strength of its Polyolester basestock.

Mobil 1 makes both 75W-140 and 75W-90 synthetic gear oil:

75W-140 link here.75W-90 llink here.

I am not sure what the other differences (i.e., besides the 75W-90 versus 75W-140) are per se. The two links above have links to the product data sheets, so it may be worth a look.

No, in the US, gear oil is sold in 1-quart plastic bottles. Since there are 2 pints to a quart, and you need 3 1/8 pints to fill, the right thing to do is buy two 1-quart bottles and you will use up just a bit more than one and a half bottles.

I also remember this from when I changed the differential oil on my 1996 Q45 some years ago. I bought only a single bottle of Mobil 1 and it was not enough ... the dealer went and got me another one (from a Pep Boys down the street, since I wanted to use Mobil 1 for sure).

Did you mean the gear oil weight? This thread has mentioned it often, I think!

Infiniti says to use 75W-90 ... I would assume that 75W-140 would probably also work out well too.

You had a 1996?

Any brand of synthetic will work well. The extended weights are for hot summer climates.
