I HAVE to store mine with the top down, and the same thing happened to me about a year ago.
Why?
I'm not a homeowner, but a renter. My property includes a garage, but the garage does NOT have a door (perhaps "3-sided car port" would be more accurate). Since I don't have a door, the neighborhood cats have access to my 'vert on their nocturnal prowls.
Cats LOVE To perch on canvas tops. I got a new top (almost) 2 years ago and I'd had it 2 DAYS when I noticed my GF's cat perched on top. He weighs almost 20 lbs., and after I shooed him away I noticed a definite bow in one of the metal braces that run side-to-side inside the top assembly (canvas remained "unclawed").
I have since split from that GF.
I ordered one of those car cover things that just covers the cockpit when the top is down, and that's how I store it: top down, inside 3-sided garage, cockpit covered. The cover works pretty well, and even works in the rain (out of the garage) if it's not too windy (I've posted pics on the site of the "cockpit cover" that show how it works). The material will stop water, but if it's storming water will blow in where to cover gets blown open. The cover cost me about $80, and if the cat's shred that it's a LOT cheaper to replace the cover than the top. The top had been replaced because of vandalism. Insurance would ONLY pay for top, not window. So I had a new top with a 15-year-old window. I've since moved to a MUCH nicer neighborhood.
I have a company car, so it's feasible for me to not drive my 'vert for weeks at a time--expecially this time of year. However, I had a freelance job about a year ago that I could NOT take my company car to. It was about 16 degrees F when I put the top up, and BAM! I thought I'd been shot! The rear window split totally from side-to-side in about 4 places! I grabbed a thicker hat and went on my way. Later I "fixed" it--sorta--with clear strapping tape. Quite a lot of clear strapping tape. Finally got the window replaced in June. Parts & Labor: $400.
Sorry, didn't mean to write a novel.
