I want to drive this car "'til the wheels fall off" but I might be getting close. "Only" 228k miles so far though. Diagnosed with bad rear wheel bearings and of course they are sealed so can't be repacked and must be replace. Quoted about $375 installed for just one side (only one side making noise at this point). Sounds ridiculous, but mabye that's the deal and I just need to suck it up if I want to keep the car. Feedback appreciated!

They will probably need to be pressed on and pressed off at a machine shop. If you can bring the "wheel assembly" in youcould bypass the mechanic and do that yourself.

Before doing so, you might check the wheel "play" and see if thebearings are really too loose unless you trust the diagnosesyou already got. If you have a laser thermometer you could checkthe temperature of the wheel/axle to see if it is hot after you driveit.
