Rear View Mirror Compass - How do I turn it off and keep it off?

New owner of a 2008 Rogue. Have been reading these posts which helped me make my decision.

I owned an '04 Murano and if I hit the compass off button it would stay off forever. On the Rogue it comes back on each time I start the car!!! Does anyone know if I can shut this off for good or is my only option a piece of electrical tape over it?

Why would you want to shut it off? My G35 has it and I never even notice it.
