This is one of the pet peeves I had with my 1995 Q45! On that car, a simple two-position rocker switch would have been much better than having two switches up there - one to enable the dimmer and the other to disable it! The darn thing reset to Auto-dim whenever the car was turned off!
Eventually, I got into the habit (but still swore at it sometimes) of reaching up whenever I started the car and disabling the auto-dimmer. Sad to see that they have not changed this yet!
Sometimes, too much electronics hand-holding is a dumb thing to do! Similar example ... a rotary tuning knob is so much easier to use than up and down scan/tune switches (which just don't move fast enough!)
Luckily, on my 2003 M45, I did not get the fancy electronics and convenience packages. So, I have an old-fashioned mechanical "flip the mirror" up dimmer. Much better solution!
