I've got a nasty issue here with my 1990 240SX. I bought the car used last summer, just using it as my drive local around town car. Ever since I got it I've had issues with a really bad vibration that occurs if I am going around a corner with the accelerator down. It starts vibrating like crazy - as soon as I lift the accelerator off, it stops. It also does it if I am driving straight and I hit a manhole down the right side of the car (rear right wheel only). It seems like the wheel is slipping along the pavement.

I assumed it might be a problem with wheel alignment, or the tires since the vehicle came with mismatched old and worn winter tires. I firgured I would just get all seasons once spring came so I put up with the problem.

Now I am wondering if it actually could be a problem with the diff - which scares the heck out of me because I have no clue what it would cost to replace a diff - or even if it's worth it on a cheap car.

Any ideas before I take it into the shop? It's a great car otherwise - I wouldn't take it on the highway though.

A little more info - I just noticed the back right shock is blown - bouncing more than once when I push that corner down. I can actually start the vibration happening if I'm going straight and hit the gas right when I hit a bump.

Must be the shock - never noticed it was blown before now.

the shock can cause a bounce in the tire but I wouldn't really call it a vibration. What you got sounds like something is getting thrown out of balance. First check to make sure the lug nuts are tight, then you may want to inspect your drive shaft center support bearing and you u joints on the shaft.

The word vibration might be wrong. It's quite violent when it happens. ie we're not talking about a little buzz my cell phone is going off vibration - more like Holy $&!$ - WTF was that!

It's almost like the wheel is skipping along the pavement if that makes any sense.

I'm getting it checked this weekend.

yea if its a thudding type event I would say the shock is the cause.

Took it to Midas - they quoted me $800 to replace the two rear shocks and the bearing plates - whatever those are. Is this normal?

They didnt take anything apart - they just test drove it and gave me an estimate of $800. Breaks down to $103x2 for parts the two shocks, $90x2 labour for the shock installation and 2 x 137 for the bearings plates (parts) and 2x36 for a Sensa-Mate (whatever that is).

That's all in CDN - seems execessive to me though - I'm taking it somewhere else for a 2nd opinion. It shouldn't take 2 hours to replace rear shocks. I'm not taking this thing on the track - just trying to get back and forth to work

Well your first mistake was going to midas. Stay away from the chain stores as they typically dont hire truly qualified mechanics to be workin on your car. Try a dealer or a recommended local independant shop. I would really preffer to see you take it to a nissan dealer. I will tell you this we charge 3 hrs to do rear struts.

Just to clean this thread up in case anyone else has the same problem - All fixed up now - took it to a better shop (not a chain) - $584. All fixed up now. The rod was moving around inside the cracks bushings within the shock and leaking. Had to replace struts, and bearing plates - drives real nice now. Thanks for the help Nistech.

Well midas diagnosed it right huh? but I am suprised they were gonna charge you more. bearing plates if I am not mistaken are the plates atop the sturt that rotate with the wheels when turning. but if its rears They arent bearing plates. just top plates.
