Unlike the front sway bar (which is solid) the rear hollow sway bar can only take so much flexing before they break which is almost always at the first bend in the tube on either end. The break is caused by normal metal fatigue and usually breaks when the bar has been flexed too much. The material Nissan used almost seemed to have a welded seam, at least mine did, and that would contribute to premature failure.
If your friend takes her Xterra off highway to play that is the other item that will speed up a break on that sway bar.
Shortly after I installed my Rancho Lift kit I broke mine after flexing the rear suspension too much on the trail. After that I bought a set of Sway Bar disconnects from Calmini that are much longer than the stock ones. It's been 3 years now and I have't broken a second one yet.
