My buddy has a 99 QX4 with approxiamately 140k miles. His rig's handling characteristics were really out of wack until he had a mechanic replace the metal 'bars' that go from the rear end, to front forward and attatch apparently to the frame.

Is there a specific name for these bars? and is there a usual mileage area where they need to be replaced? Any aftermarket bushings for this or must each full unit be replaced?

I'm headed for 85k and I know it's at least shock and strut time for my 2001 unit. I'm wanting to take care of anything else that's prone to wear out. Thanks, Nitro

I believe they are called upper and lower control arms for the rear suspension. they wear out but have no set time standard, depends on drivong habits likely. Take a look at this picture this is of the upper and lower control arms.http://www.trademotion.com/sch...0.gif

The bars NEVER wear out. The bushings however do. I think they were made of inferior rubber and they just dissolve over time. I replaced my with poly bushings as I did on the front end. Makes a ton of difference.

But what really changed the handling, (at 80mph it was swapping lanes in any kind of wind) was the vertical stabilizer bars on the front sway bar. They made it handle like new again.
