I was looking around the back of my car and am wanting to purchase new rear speakers for a 1996 240sx SE. I cannot get the plastic cover off from over the speakers and am not sure exactly what size the speakers are. I think they're 6 1/2s and i am buying clarions ( stocks are also clarions ) to replace them. Any help or feedback for either question would be appreciated.

you don't take off the speaker grills. . . the whole rear deck pops off. . . it's only connected with pop-clips so just pull up on the deck with a little gusto. . . btw, it helps if you lower the rear seats first. . .

all speakers in a 240 are 4x6's, unless someone modified the car

Nope. S14's are a 6.5" round in all four corners.

Just lower the seat back, grip the center of the rear decklid with both hands, and yank up. The hole thing is held in with about 5 or 6 clips and just comes off, like any panel... The grill is attached via screws under and to the decklid.

I have always taken my rear speakers out first thing for the last 5 years or so. I did it the first week I got this 240 back in 99', as rear fill is overrated, and allows less of a budget for a proper front stage :) Then there is the whole imaging and other things that would be better discussed in the stereo section :)

For that matter, the coupe version of the s13 also has 6.5" round on the rear deck.

Also keep in mind that the holes in the s13 are odd (metric?) sized. This means 4x6 door speakers will have a slight gap between the speaker surround and the door mounting dish that will need to be blocked for acoustic purity. It also means that not all 6.5" speakers will have brackets wide enough to accomodate the holes in the rear deck, though some will work. (Crutchfield actually lists the s13 coupe as taking 6.75" speakers in the rear deck.)
