I've pulled all the interior to insulate the walls and am now putting everything back together. However, the rear seat belts, that I had unbolted and layed in the floor, have retracted to a short length and will not release. I've looked at them and worked/fiddled with them for close to an hour and cannot see any 'trigger'/release. Can/will someone helpt me with this. Prompt answers please; I'm right in the middle of this.

I am unsure how to fix this. It happened to me once before on my Pathfinder and I eventually got it to release after much fiddling.

Here is the link to the FSM seat belt section:

The retractor is a locking type that responds to sudden forces. I can only assume the retractor has now locked in place. There is a test procedure that involves 'tilting' the retractor on pg SB-10. Any tilt more than 30 deg from vertical will lock the belt. Perhaps you can try positioning it perfectly vertical as suggested and see if it will release.

I will send a message to our resident INFINITI tech to see if he can help, but I do not expect to back from him. He does work during the day, and does not check e-mails.

Thanks philpa, but I think I screwed the pooch. I took off the end cap of one, and there are 3 plastic parts loose that I now have to try to fit back. I gotta tell ya, I do most of my own work and have owned a lot of cars, but have NEVER worked on one as aggravating as this one. I'll keep checking back to see if you get a reply. Thanks again.

Hold on here, did you say you pulled all the pieces out of the Rogue?

I mean wow come on I would have loved to seen tons of pictures and write ups. Post if you have them.

Hi Jerry, I didn't think to take pictures, but I think my wife took a couple. I took this Rogue on a 3k mile trip in March, and the road noise, along with water noise during heavy rains, plus the pounding on the roof with rain, was extremely loud. We insulated the doors a couple of months ago (see posts on frustrating window motors and panels), but haven't had time to finish the job. Day before yesterday, we started. We stripped EVERYTHING except the dash and center console (and the doors that we had previously done). There is good insulation under/around the front seats, but that's it. The walls are empty as well as the flooring from the front seats back. The roof has the one piece headliner and nothing else. We stuffed the walls space with 6" fiberglass insulation and used matted sound proofing w/foil backing on everything else; we padded everything. I'll check on the pictures and report back on the difference in sound level.

Once you let the 'magic' out there is no way to put it back.

Even the FSM doesn't show 'how' to reassemble the seat belt retractors.

I think you have 2 options here if you are unable to fix it:

1) Reassemble as best you can and take to the dealer. Explain the situation and if they are accommodating, they might be able to fix it for you under warranty.

2) Purchase a new seat belt retractor. $117 US from one of our sponsors:

No one has ever sat in the back seat, so the belts have never been used. I'm beginning to think that they may have been defective. Otherwise, why would they retract and not release? Makes no sense to me. I've also noticed that the 'passenger air bag "off" light illuminates occassionally for no reason while an adult is sitting in the seat. The next time I take it in to the dealer, I'll have them check everything.

Aww I know the frustration there.

If you have yet to get it.

You need to make sure that the belt retractor assembly is perfectly perpendicular in order to release the lock. Although I have no removed the locks off a Rogue I am assuming they use similar models to modern Nissan vehicles.

When removing the bolt that is typically mounted to the bracket you usually have to pull a small tab on the bottom out of its mating hole in the body. If the retractor is stuck in a position that will not allow you to properly re-install it. Hold it at a perfect 90 degree angle and pull on it to unlock the retractor.

Sometimes this also happens if the LATCH feature is activated but that usually cancels itself after a few tugs.

Let me know if you got it or if that was not your issue. If you have the ability to post a picture that would help immensely.

You passenger airbag light may come on and go off if the weight is shifted in the passenger. The Occupant Classification system used in some Nissan models uses the variable input from weight and position sensors to select a certain deployment program depending on the position or weight distribution. Whenever there is any problem with the airbag control system or a circuit fault in any of its circuits the light in the gauge area will come on and stay on after the engine is started. There is a bulb check that is normal but if the light comes back on and stay on get the system looked at. One of the things I personnally find interesting about our airbag systems is they store a fault code until they are erased.
