say hey just got a 90 240 SE. there's some rust on the right rear quarter panel. how do you get a quarter panel off? i asked a guy at a junkyard and he said you have to cut it off. i don't know he looked like quite an unsavory fellow. what do you do?

also anybody do any welding in NY, specifically Long Island.

fixing rust = cutting out rust and welding a new piece in.

yea...the rear quarter panel is connected to the roof, and then down the a-pillars. You literally have to cut the bad part out and weld new metal. A good bodyshop can do it, but it's expensive usually.

yeah i'm dealing with a wreck right now and my rocker panel and quarter panel got dented. the only way to fix it is to cut and weld in your case. i got lucky mine can be pulled. not only is the quarter panel connected to the roof and so on but the car is also unibody.

If the rust is surface rust, it can be sanded down to remove the rust, and then some plastic filler used to smooth it out, and then primed and painted. If it's rusted through, the repair process can vary depending on the extent. Worst case scenario, you would need to replace the 1/4 panel.

It's a relatively expensive job. Most 1/4 panel replacements check in at about 18 hours of labor for the removal and install alone. It's welded to the rocker panel, the latch pillar, the C pillar and the trunk floor. Perhaps even the rear panel and wheelwell as well. And none of this includes the removal of parts just to get to the 1/4 panel. The rear taillight and the rear 1/4 glass are two examples.

depending on how severe, all options are already said. if its rusted through pretty bad, you can just cut out the rusted area and weld a piece of sheet metal in. if its not rusted all the way through you can most likely grind it all off and treat the bare metal surface. but, to remove a quarter panel, theres about 150 spot welds that will have to be either drilled out or grinded down. the quarter panel attaches to the rear body panel, the wheel well, rocker, b pillar, and the roof. if youre going for cheap just cut out the rusted area and weld in a new piece. just because its cheap doesnt mean its not a proper repair becuase it is.
