wtf does the rear plate do? keep the trans from sticking to th block? space it out? like is it just a big *** shim? is it to space the starter?

what is its main purpose in life - i cut myself on that thing for the 2nd time today - and it always pinches me goin back together - so for real someone tell me i can melt it.

I'm sure its there for a purpose. There would be a hole at the bottom of the transmission if it weren't there (down by the "dust plates" that hold it on)
