Does anyone have any knowledge of how difficult it is to change the rear main seal on a SOHC 90 coupe? Ive changed the clutch, but left the flywheel intact. I realise i have to pull the transmission again (in which case ill put a JUN lightweight flywheel on this time!), but what is involved after that? Im leakin oil there big time.

There are two ways you can do it , one is leaving the seal retainer plate in and removing the seal from the retainer. This needs to be done carefully because the retainer is made of aluminum and can break. The best way is to remove it this will require a gasket and some silicone sealer to seal the pan. The torque on the flywheel bolts are 105-112 ft.-lbs. for manual. If you have done the clutch make sure the pilot bushing was replaced this tends to be over looked on clutch replacements. the seal replacement is simplier with the seal retainer removed.

So if i cant break the bolts loose on the flywheel, what other way can i get to it? Is it easier to take the transmission off and go that route, or should i pull the engine? Or can i jack the engine up, take the oil pan off, and go in from underneath?

The best way is take the trans out unless you have engine work that needs to be done by pulling the engine out. The seal is gotten from the rear and the flywheel has to be taken off. The rear seal comes off the back of the crankshaft. If unsure this might be a good time to have a shop do the work. It is best done on a lift.
