Blargggghhh.

I'm doing my friends SR swap. Go to change out the rear main seal and we couldn't get the seal out the way we got mine out, so we resort to pulling the piece out that the main seal sits in. Here is a pic of the piece I'm talking about:

http://www.phase2motortrend.com/rearmainseal.html

Other than the four bolts and the two guides that you can see in the pic, there are two bolts on the bottom, and go through the bottom of the motor and have nuts holding it in place. We took those two bolts off and we finally wrenched the old main seal out of place, but we still cannot get the piece out from around the crank.

It's hard to describe, but there is roomfor it to come out, but it still won't come out, and it's not the silicone holding it in.

Any ideas? Or anyone in socal want to come help out? Thanks.

so are you saying that the main seal is stuck to the metal like it is glued on it?

If so, maybe you can tourch that plastic out and scrape out the reaminaing.

I was watching Hi-Rev on Direct TV last night on the speed channel and seems like they have a particular tool to take out the old rear main seal. It's kinda like a hook and you just pull the seal out with it.

sorry to go off the topic a little but is it pretty important to change the seals when you do the SR swap? Just wondering 'cause I'm trying to buy up everything I need, and saw the seals for sale, and was wondering if I really neeed them.

Nah, it's like the two little bolts onthe bottom are holding it in, stopping it from being pulled out, but it's not, it's weird.

Any other suggestions? Maybe Jesse has an idea.

If I would have known then I would have changed it. I got a small leak so yeah if the motor is already out then change it for future hassles. :(

I think he's right, i believe that there are special tools for rear main installs but im sure you can do it w/o one.

You can pry, scrape, tug, bite, push all you want. Just so long as you don't scratch or damage the metal surfaces. I usually get two needlenose plyers and yank at it from two sides at a time on most engines I work with.
