I changed the rear main seal on the motor just so i would be prepared when it went in... and its just sitting on the engine hoist while we are turboing my friends ka and a day afterwards i looked and there is an oil spot under it. I thought it may be just from when i dipped it in oil to put it in but i wiped it off and there is a small oil spot again.. but there hasnt been any oil in the motor. It was dry docked befor it came, and i even pulled the plug and drained a little bit out a while ago. WTF is this! I dont want to have to pull the transmission and clutch again to redo it. Also, i think im missing a small piece from the huge metal transmission plate/gasket because i can see straight through to the flywheel because there is a small semi circle openeing in the back... any advice guys??

did you knick the outter edge of the seal when you were putting it in, or bind the inner lip during install? Also, did you apply any RTV along the spot where the oil pan and the block meet? i replaced the rear main and applied the RTV w/ the engine on the stand, so excuse the traces of rtv all over.

Couldnt tell you, although my method for putting it in and getting the old one out included a flat head screw driver, pliars, and a BF hammer. So yeah, im gonna pull the transmission and go get me a new rear main if its pouring and please someone post on the correct way to get the old one out and the new one in.

Even the manual I have for the CA. The physical manual that has the CA and RB motors in it says use a flat head and shows a hammer in the picture heh.

you didn't scratch either of the metal surfaces, did you? i generally tap a thin blade screwdriver in along the outside, at an angle that points toward the center of the seal and away from the edge so i don't scratch the wall, and then pry out gently. Then when installing the new seal, apply oil around the inner and outer sides of the seal, put the inside of the seal on the top, making sure the lip hasn't folded back, and then twist it on (again, paying attention to that lip) and then tap in w/ an extension evenly until its flush. If that lip folded over, the oil will go by it . If there's a good size scratch at the base, oil might travel thru the scratch past the seal.

and also, its common for the oil pan to leak right there under the rear main, which is why i applied the RTV over the crack.

Yeah i pulled it off and the rear main was fine but oil was leaking at the middle of that rubber gasket on the oil pan. So i pulled a you and caked on the rtv and it seems fine now. Thanks
