im on my third time replacing the rear main seal on my Z32, oil keeps leaking after i replace the seal with a brand new one on each time, the rear crankshaft has a small groove on it, would this be my problem? has anybody heard about speedy sleeves that go on the rear crankshaft? have you guys used them before? or would the seal itself will fix it. Any input is appreciated. :squint: :squint:

persistant rear main failure is unusual, you sure you are geting them in right? and not driing them in too far? or damaging them in the process? or using cheapo autozone seals?

i dont think i have damaged the seal on the installation process, i bought it from Checker's auto, is the felpro seal that they have at Napa auto as well, i have greased the seal up and gently tapped it with a mallet on the retainer till it seats flush, then grabbed the retainer with the seal on it and making sure that get inserted on the crankshaft evenly, then torqued it down at specs and tadan! it was leaking still after a few days, i noticed a groove on the crankshaft where the seal goes.

then is when ive heard from somebody that the seals wear the crankshaft down causing that line on it making them leak, and somebody told me to get a speedy sleeve. i had no idea what that was up until now. Have you had any issues like this b4?

When you replace it this time use a lil rtv red to help seal everything up. Did it on mine and it worked great. The reason mine leaked was I started using full syn oil and the oem seals do not like it.

Not sure if Felpro has a different design than OEM. But, the OEM seals require careful installation. Most use a piece of Lexan over the crankshaft when installing it. The springs around the seal have a tendency to pop out during installation. Also, see if you can install the seal so it isn't on the scratch. And like was suggested above, use either some Locktite Red or Seal glue to hold it in place.

On the other point, I have never had an OEM seal leak due to synthetic oil. Fresh seals will seal and if it is leaking, then it's probably time to change it.

quick update, after replacing the rear main seal multiple times i ended up using the speedy sleeve on the crankshaft and that has fixed the leaking.
